Hello, my feminist friends! This week on the blog I am interviewing my pal Sabiine. If you’re in the Atlanta area and need some dope new music to listen to, she’s got ya covered. Stay tuned~
I’m Sabiine (suh-bean)
I’ve always played music for fun. I taught myself guitar and piano when I was around 8 years old. I was always a keen singer. In high school, I began composing my own music and writing songs but it was still only a hobby as I pursued academics. During my senior year at SCAD I was just so bored and burnt out from the graphic design. I decided to leave and allow myself to explore my talent and passion completely. I was super stressed and anxious since I basically dropped out of university… but within a few weeks, I was already in a studio with a 9x Grammy-winning producer so of course, I was thrilled and somewhat relieved. Coincidence? I dunno. I was pumped that legitimate people in the industry saw my potential and networked me. So that is really it.

Through the generosity of producers and musicians, I’ve been “in the industry” for the last year producing my music. So essentially, my own dissatisfaction and boredom with my academic/work routine inspired me to really pursue music.
Do I believe women should be equal to men? Well, yes. Duh doi. Do I make noise and banter about it online or attend feminist rallies? No, it simply isn’t something I like/want to do. Of course, I believe women should be treated equally and justly. Personally, I’ve never experienced real inequality in any job I’ve worked or even in the music scene. Luckily I’ve been able to work with really amazing, kind people. And any person who I think is the slightest bit shady I really try to stay away from. It’s my job to maintain my integrity no matter what musical opportunities I might miss out out on. It’s my job to assert myself as an artist, not just a vocalist. I don’t like to talk about it, I like to prove it to people. It’s about protecting yourself and remaining authentic, especially in an industry where most people are out for their own gain whether it’s money or something else.
I would hope my music can empower everyone. I wish to inspire people to live a life true to themselves and their desires/passions. Life is way too short to not do what you want… I know that sounds silly as hell. You’ll never regret trying something or chasing a dream. You might fail miserably, but at least you won’t be 80 years old and wondering “what if”?
So, I guess I never really thought my music has some super powerful or relatable message… but rather my story of quitting what exhausted me to pursue this passion can maybe empower someone to give their dreams a try, too. And if I fail miserably just forget I ever said any of this…
My favorite part of being an artist is simply being an artist. I’m grateful to have a horde of mediums which I can express myself through. I like to make music but I also like to entertain and make people happy. And obvi making bomb ass songs definitely feeds my ego. There’s definitely a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from creating something.
I look forward to releasing my music these upcoming months! Very excited to see where it all takes me. This is just the beginning!
